Lucerne, Switzerland is a city filled with history, legend and beauty. Why even Mark Twain couldn’t help but remark at this lovely city flanked by cobalt waters and crisp mountain views.  Whether you’re considering Lucerne for a corporate meeting or travel incentive destination, here are ten places you’ll not want to miss among the mountains and historic downtown:

  1. Culture and Convention Center
    Catch a performance at what is considered to be one of the best concert halls in the world. The Culture and Convention Center offers a variety of different concerts from Orchestras to Jazz shows. Regardless of what you select, the masterly devised acoustics make for a unique listening experience.
  1. Mount Pilatus
    Explore the breathtaking Mount Pilatus, shrouded in folklore and dragon myths. The mountain is easily accessible and the many options allow you to choose your own adventure. Take an iconic red cogwheel train through the mountain or ascend via cable car. For a fuller experience you could even take a boat part of the way. On the mountain you can dine at a restaurant, go for a hike, or an unforgettable toboggan run.
  1. Lake Lucerne
    Spend some time splashing in the blue waters of Lake Lucerne. To see more of the lake you can go for a site-seeing cruise or if you are looking to relax for a couple hours head over to a lakeside park and take a swim. Lido by the Verkehrshaus is a popular choice. You’ll be able to find food options as well as enjoy a view of Mount Pilatus.
  1. Mussegg Wall
    Take a hike along the Medieval rampart walls and tour four of the nine towers. You will also get the chance to see Lucerne’s oldest city clock located in the Zyt Tower. You can even go inside the tower for a fascinating view of the inner workings of the clock. Be sure to climb to the top of the tower for an amazing view.
  1. Jesuit Church
    This impressive baroque style building is located right along the River Reuss. As you walk around the city it will be difficult not to spot the impressive architecture. It is worth stopping in to see the stately interior and to take a look as the vestments of the revered patron brother Klaus.
  1. Swiss Museum of Transport
    If you have time for a museum visit, consider stopping by what is considered Switzerland’s most popular museum. Observe the progression of travel via trains, planes, and automobiles. While you are there take a look at the museum’s excellent planetarium and the large collection of Hans Erni’s work.
  1. The Lion of Lucerne
    This impressive Lion sculpture is carved directly into the cliff face and is over thirty feet long and twenty feet high, making it one of the most popular tourist sites in Lucerne.The dying lion commemorates the deaths of the Swiss Guards who were killed in the French Revolution.
  1. Rosengart Collection
    Art lovers will enjoy perusing the impressive collection of modern art at the Rosengart Collection. The collection is predominantly comprised of the works of Pablo Picasso and Paul Klee, but contain additional pieces by 23 other artists.
  1. Chapel Bridge
    Take a walk through Europe’s oldest covered wooden bridge and learn about the city’s history through the paintings located throughout. Chapel Bridge is not only rich in history, dating back to the 14th century, but also provides a picturesque view of the surrounding mountains, lake, and city. It’s no wonder this historic bridge has become the icon of Lucerne.
  1. Old Town
    After visiting the Chapel Bridge, take some time to explore the shops in the Old Town Lucerne along the Reuss River. The picturesque buildings and cobblestone walking streets alone make it worth the walk. However, this is also the ideal spot to enjoy some great food and pick up some souvenirs. A trip to Switzerland wouldn’t be complete without sampling some chocolate and cheese.
