The mere mention of Fiji conjures up images of sandy beaches, palm trees, and snorkeling. This tropical paradise is comprised of over 330 islands and is famed as the soft coral capital of the world. A visit to Fiji is packed with unique cultural experiences, vivid natural beauty, and once-in-a-lifetime adventures. Here are ten unforgettable experiences to add to your itinerary.

Astrolabe Reef

Surrounding the Kadavu Island is the world’s 4th largest barrier reef. You can explore the reef with snorkeling or diving. One of the most beautiful areas of the reef is the Naiqoro Passage. You will see a myriad of small reef fish, manta rays, sharks, and brightly colored coral gardens. While you are on Kadavu, be sure to do some bird watching or go for a kayak ride.

Garden of the Sleeping Giant

The botanist in your group will want to see this garden’s amazing collection of over 2,000 varieties of orchids. In addition to orchids, the garden also features a jungle walk and peaceful lily ponds. After relaxing in the garden, be sure to visit the Sleeping Giant Zipline for a change of pace. The thrilling ride will allow you to take in the jungle at record speed and fly by some Fijian waterfalls.

Island Cruise

If you are hoping to tour some of the more remote islands, a day cruise is a great option. Many cruises will take you through the Mamanuca or Yasawa Islands. Certain tours will even let you explore the island where Castaway was filmed. In addition to exploring the islands, you will likely be treated to some authentic Fijian food.

Fire Walking Ceremony

For some truly unique nightlife, watch a fire-walking ceremony. This legend-based tradition has been maintained for hundreds of years. A typical ceremony will include singing, dancing, storytelling, and of course, fire-walking. Hotels, resorts, and cultural centers host the fire-walkers as they share this important aspect of their culture.

Bouma National Heritage Park

While in Fiji you need to experience at least one jungle hike. Bouma National Heritage Park is the ideal location. The park is located on the scenic Island of Taveuni, where you can essentially choose your own adventure. You can explore ancient ruins, birdwatch, or take a rigorous hike up the Tavoro Falls followed by a refreshing swim in the waterfall pools.

Fiji Museum

Although it may be difficult to tear yourself away from the sandy beaches and lush forests, history lovers will want to check out the Fiji Museum. It is incredibly informative and after touring the museum you can enjoy a walk in the surrounding Thurston Gardens. You will learn about Fiji’s cannibalistic past as well as the cultural influences from the Indian population. The museum also hosts a collection Fiji’s modern-day artwork. Most notable is the large double-hulled canoe. If you time your visit right you might be able to observe pottery demonstrations, or even live music and dancing.

Sawa-i-Lau Caves

On the Sawa-i-Lau Island, visitors can take a swim unlike any other in the island’s famous caves. The majestic limestone cave walls tower about fifty feet above the pool and may look familiar to fans of the 1980s movie Blue Lagoon. For added adventure, a second cave can be accessed through an underwater tunnel.

Sabeto Hot Springs

For an all-natural spa treatment, spend some time at the Sabeto Hot Springs. You will undergo a process of coating yourself in mud and relaxing in the geothermal mud pools and clear springs. Visitors leave with refreshed, glowing skin and relaxed muscles. For the complete treatment, you can get a massage from one of the locals.

Kava Ceremony

For authentic Fijian culture, take a tour of a local village and participate in a kava ceremony. Kava is Fiji’s most popular drink and has rich historical significance. Made from ground kava root, it may not taste like much, but will leave you feeling very relaxed. After the preparation and serving of kava, the ceremony is concluded with dancing.

Sunbathe on the Beach

Make sure to leave plenty of time to sunbathe on Fiji’s beautiful beaches. While there is no shortage of breathtaking sandy shores, many resorts allow guests private beach access. The Likuliku Lagoon Resort on Malolo Island, one of the most unique resorts, features overwater bungalows with glass floors. The island’s sandy white beaches are also some of Fiji’s best.

Between exploring islands, observing cultural traditions, and pampering yourself on the beach, Fiji will satisfy the various preferences your group might have. Whether you come eager for adventure or ready to soak up some sun, Fiji will not disappoint.
