Copenhagen is a city that has something for everyone. This trait, along with its historic sites, the oldest amusement parks in the world, trendy shopping, nightlife hotspots, design talent and profusion of Michelin-starred restaurants, makes the energetic, bustling Danish city a must-see for anyone’s travel bucket list.

  1. Stand before a Fairytale Come to Life
  • Little Mermaid Statue
In Copenhagen you can look upon a statue inspired by the Little Mermaid fairytale.  The statue is a tribute to the story’s world famous author, Hans Christian Andersen, and is arguably the city’s most well-known landmark.
  1. Get in Touch with Your Inner Child
  • Tivoli Gardens
Coming in a close second for recognizable landmarks is Tivoli Gardens, the exuberantly over-the-top Tivoli Gardens, one of the world’s oldest amusement parks. There are plenty of rides if you are in the mood for an adrenaline rush, and for those who would rather sightsee, the theme park does not disappoint with its stunning 19th-century representations of the Orient.
  1. Spend Time on a Historic Waterfront
  • Nyhavn
You can experience history with a drink in your hand in Nyhavn, a historic waterfront that overlooks ancient wooden ships moored in a 17th-century canal. The tall, painted houses bordering the canal on both sides were built in the 1600s and 1700s. Many now house food and drink establishments and offer outdoor seating to better enjoy the view. You may want to take the houses numbered 18, 20 and 67. Hans Christian Andersen was a resident of each at different times.
  1. Shop at One of the World’s Largest Pedestrian Malls
  • Strøget
Have you ever dreamed of frequenting a seemingly endless street of stores? Then Strøget is the place for you. This pedestrian street offers both luxurious high-end attire and affordable yet fashionista-friendly clothing. You can find the latter, as well as fascinating specialty businesses dating back centuries, by exploring the narrow side streets of the mall.
  1. Tour a Breathtaking Ornate Palace
  • Christiansborg Palace
The site of Danish Parliament, Denmark’s Supreme Court and the Prime Minister’s office is the gorgeous Christiansborg Palace. It is set on the Islet of Slotsholmen. The culmination of its reception ornate rooms is the Great Hall, which has the capacity to seat 400 guests. If you are curious about what the theatre going experience was like for members of the Danish Royal Family in the 1700s, you can check out the small court theatre.
  1. Get back to Nature in Majestic Gardens
  • Botanical Garden
Both the plants and the structures that house them jockey for attention at Copenhagen’s Botanical Garden. Such is the power of their beauty. The gardens are the site of more than 13,000 plant species – some of which are 200 years old. The glasshouses are historically significant as well, dating back to the 1870s.
  1. Get a Glimpse of the Way Royals Lived
  • Rosenborg Castle
It may be a royal place of residence just like Christiansborg Palace, but Rosenborg Castle has a distinctly personal feel. It was the home of King Christian IV, who is one of the most well-known Scandinavian kings due to his engagement in the far reaching Thirty Years’ War. The lavish interiors have remained largely intact since the castle was built in the early 1600s.
  1. See Artifacts Chronicling Denmark’s Past
  • Nationalmuseet
The collections of Danish artifacts found in Nationalmuseet are so expansive, it is easy to get lost in them. There are items representing every era of Denmark’s storied history. Perhaps the most famous among them is the Trundholm Sun Chariot, which portrays the belief in Norse mythology that a divine horse towed the sun across its firmament.

Offering all of the aforementioned sights and more, Copenhagen is a place where the young and old come together to experience a revitalizing blend of ancient history, lovely landscapes and a vibrant youth culture. Whatever the direction you desire your trip to take, this lively city can fulfill your wishes.
