London is a city rich with cultural and historical significance. There are so many places to visit, so many things to see—it’s hard to know where to start! But never fear: here’s our list of ten of London’s must-see destinations.

  1. London Eye

Likely the most famous Ferris wheel in the world, the London Eye sees over 3.75 million visitors every year. Offering breathtaking views of the capital and its most famous landmarks, this feat of design and engineering is something you won’t want to miss. While it is no longer the highest public viewing point in London, the Eye is still London’s number one tourist attraction.

  1. Buckingham Palace

For a taste of pomp and circumstance, head over to Buckingham Palace. Built in 1837, and serving as the Royal Family’s London residence since Queen Victoria’s accession, the palace is one of Britain’s most iconic buildings. Don’t miss the Changing of the guard at 11:30am!

  1. Madame Tussauds

The wax museum to rule all others, Madame Tussauds offers lifelike figures of some of the world’s most famous faces. From Shakespeare to Miley Cyrus, this unique museum features over 300 sculptures of figures from history, showbiz, sports, and politics.

  1. The British Museum

If you’re looking for a non-wax museum option, the British Museum is the place to go. This museum houses the Rosetta Stone, the Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon, and a number of Egyptian mummies, to name a few points of interest. With over 13 million artifacts from the ancient world, you can wander around for hours on end.

  1. Tower of London

If you’re looking to learn about Britain’s history, it can’t get much better than the Tower of London. The Line of Kings, inside the White Tower, features incredible displays of royal armaments and armor. The Tower also houses the Crown Jewels, in addition to the Royal Mint. As an added perk, the Tower of London is just adjacent to the Tower Bridge, another of London’s most famous landmarks.

  1. Westminster Abbey

Founded by Edward the Confessor in 1065, Westminster is the traditional place of coronation for English and British monarchs. Sovereigns were not merely crowned here, though—most were buried here, too. However, Westminster Abbey has for many years been the location for royal weddings as well. Quite a lot of royalty in and out of this building!

  1. The View from The Shard

For a more recent, though no less memorable, addition to the London skyline, visit The Shard. Inaugurated in 2012, The Shard is the tallest building in London. The View from The Shard, a privately operated observation deck, offers 360 degree views of up to 40 miles.

  1. The Houses of Parliament/Big Ben

Located on the banks of the River Thames, the Houses of Parliament (officially named the Palace of Westminster) are a must-see to if you’re interested in British politics. The parliament buildings offer tours that let you witness live debates and political discussions. But if that doesn’t appeal to you, there’s always Big Ben, the famous clock tower. It doesn’t get much more iconic than that!

  1. Trafalgar Square

A classic tourist stop, Trafalgar Square is a great place to snap a few photos. Surrounded by the Admiralty Arch, St. Martin-in-the-Field, and the National Gallery, there’s plenty to see here. Plus, if you come around Christmastime, you’ll get to see the giant Christmas tree sent from Norway every winter.

  1. Hyde Park

London’s largest open space, Hyde Park covers 350 acres and has been delighting guests since 1635. In the center of the park you’ll find the Serpentine, a man-made lake perfect for boating and swimming. Or, for a less serene option, you can check out Speakers’ Corner, a traditional forum for public speeches and debates where Karl Mark, Vladimir Lenin, and George Orwell monologued. If that doesn’t interest you, you can always visit Apsley House. Formerly the home of the first Duke of Wellington, it’s now a museum housing an incredible collection of paintings.
