When traveling to Cancun, the beauty of this tropical Mexican paradise is captivating for all who visit.  However, to truly sample the city, one must experience it as a local does through the many flavors.  Some of the best eateries are smaller restaurants and cafes where locals blend a variety of cuisines to create truly inspired dishes.  Here are a few of our favorite places to eat while in Cancun, Mexico:

Ah Cacao Chocolate Café
No visit to Mexico would be complete without including chocolate, and one of the best places to sample this delicacy is at the Ah Cacao Chocolate Café.  This Mexican plantation serves cacao drinks, brownies as well as coffee and is ideal for breakfast or an afternoon pick-me-up!

Café Antionette

Located right in the center of Cancun is Café Antionette. With freshly baked pastries, piping hot coffee and a variety of juices this quaint café is perfect for a fast breakfast on the go!  Or, stock up on treats for snacking later in the day.  (A box of macarons is a perfect choice for those late night cravings.)

Marakame Café

Adults with an adventurous spirit will find the Marakame Café a playful choice given its treehouse theme and delicious international menu. Live music fills the air in the evenings, making it a great place to enjoy the outdoor environment. For traditional Mexican dishes or a great brunch spot, Marakame Café has it all.

El Fish Fritanga

When you want to enjoy the wonderful weather outdoors, including your time dining, El Fish Fritanga can’t be beat.  Bury your feet into the sand as you eat and look out at the lagoon. While it is not traditional Mexican food, the restaurant offers freshly caught sea food and even a late night taco stand. El Fish Fritanga is a quick and enjoyable stop for any meal.

Lorenzillo’s

For over 30 years Lorenzillo’s has been serving and perfecting lobster dishes.  If you or your travelers are those who love this crustacean, Lorenzillo’s is dining heaven!  A reservation is recommended as this restaurant is a staple for locals and tourists alike. The stunning atmosphere includes a scenic view of the Nichupte Lagoon.

Thai Lounge Cancun

The Thai Lounge is a fabulous venue that is built within palapa-roof huts and is in walking distance from most hotels near La Isla Shopping Village.  Some of the huts have traditional tables while others are lounges with cushions and elegant dining trays.  Either way, you’re in for a treat!  Eating at the Tai Lounge Cancun is a relaxing dining experience with delicious Thai and Indian cuisine filled spectacular sunset views.

Harry’s Grill
For formal steakhouse dining at its finest you won’t find a better than Harry’s Grill.  The immaculate service, modern dining room combined with a feast for taste buds and eyes alike is perfect for business as well as a relaxing evening of luxury dining.  The meals are plentiful and a  full wine menu is available.  The desserts, including the fairy floss (also known as cotton candy), are spectacular in presentation as well as flavor.

La Troja

The distinctive flavors of Italian, French and Mexican cuisine are what set the La Troja apart from other cafés in the area.  Set among potted ferns and towering oaks, it’s the perfect lunch spot for locals and travelers alike.  Featuring healthy homemade food, over 30 different salads, filled crepes, pastas and freshly squeezed juices, there’s something special for everyone!

Du Mexique

For a luxury dining experience you’ll find nothing quite like the Du Mexique.  With only seven tables, this upscale restaurant features gourmet dishes inspired by French cuisine with a pinch of Mexican flare.  This bistro style restaurant not only has delicious food, but live music serenades diners.  Reservations are strongly recommended!

La Destilleria

Tequila lover’s need not despair.  The La Destilleria is not only filled with history but you can sample over 100 varieties!  This restaurant, distillery, and tequila museum is truly an experience and the menu includes spiced corn soup, fish, seafood and classic Mexican cuisine.  Don’t forget to end the dining experience with the house specialty: caramel crepes.

When traveling to Cancun one may expect to find the flavors of Mexico.  But with so many other cuisines blended into the city, Cancun is a food lover’s paradise.  Whether relaxing, enjoying beautiful views or luxury dining, this wonderful city has it all!
