Nicknamed the Pearl of the Adriatic, Dubrovnik is the ideal vacation spot. Some parts of Dubrovnik may look familiar to fans of HBO’s Game of Thrones or Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but the city also stands on its own merits. You won’t have to go far to enjoy Dubrovnik’s complex history, natural beauty, and rich culture.

City Walls

Dubrovnik is perhaps most famous for the medieval city walls that surround it. Therefore, a visit is not complete without taking a few hours to explore the walls and the connecting forts. The city walls also provide a great view of Old Town Dubrovnik and the Adriatic Sea.

Dubrovnik’s Summer Festival

Some of the city’s best nightlife can be found during Dubrovnik’s Summer Festival. If your visit falls during the 45 day long festival, you must be sure to partake in the festivities and catch a show. The festival is located in Old Town and will give you the chance to see the city lit up as well as enjoy some fantastic plays, operas, and concerts!

War Photo Limited

This gallery features the photos of world-renowned photojournalists. The gallery aims to dispel false ideas regarding war and reveal its terror and cruelty. There is a permanent display covering Yugoslavia’s wars, but other rotating exhibitions are featured here as well. While a sobering stop, War Photo Limited is valuable in better understanding Croatia’s history and the tragic effects of war.

 Cable Car to Mount Srđ

For the best view of Dubrovnik, ascend Mount Srđ via cable car. From there you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the terra cotta rooftops and the stunning blue of the Adriatic. The only way this breathtaking view might be enhanced is by enjoying it over a plate of delicious Dubrovnik cuisine at the Panorama Restaurant and Bar. You can also soak in some history at the Imperial Fortress built in 1806 by the notorious Napoleon Bonaparte.

Old Town

Aside from the city walls, Old Town is Dubrovnik’s most famous attraction. You will quickly understand why, as you walk through the limestone streets and stop in the charming shops. The old-time feel of the town is maintained by the prohibition of motorized vehicles.

Kayak on the Adriatic Sea

Soak up some sun on the beautiful Adriatic Sea. Consider taking a guided kayak tour around the city walls for a different view of Dubrovnik. Not much is better than watching golden beams hit the majestic rocky coast on a sunset tour.

Lokrum Island

If you are looking for a great place to hike or enjoy a refreshing swim, hop on a ferry to Lokrum Island. Due to a curse placed by Benedictine Monks, residency on the island is prohibited making it the perfect retreat. With the many activities Lokrum Island provides you can easily spend the day here. Attractions on Lokrum include snorkeling, paying a visit to the botanical gardens, and exploring historic buildings like the old monastery and the rustic Fort Royal.

Church of St. Blaise

For a lesson in Dubrovnik’s history, stop by the church dedicated to the city’s patron saint. Legend has it that St. Blaise appeared in a dream to warn of an impending Venetian attack. You will also be able to enjoy the church’s beautiful baroque architecture.

Cliffs and Caves

For a fusion of nightlife and natural beauty, enjoy a drink along the cliffs at one of the  Buža bars. Thrill seekers can also enjoy cliff jumping here. For a truly unique experience grab a drink in a natural cave at Cave Bar More. Enjoy a glass of champagne in a comfortable recliner while surrounded by the cave’s natural wonders.

Franciscan Monastery

Within Old Town Dubrovnik is the 14th Century monastery, a mixture of Baroque, Romanesque, and Gothic architecture. Within you will find a small museum of relics, a large library, and an indoor garden. However, the most notable attraction is the historic pharmacy. It dates back to 1317, making it one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe that is still in business.

Whether touring historical sites in the iconic red roofed city or sipping a drink from the rocky cliffs off of the Adriatic, a visit to Dubrovnik will not disappoint.
